Typically, the turn of the calendar brings with it renewed energy for making resolutions, writing out plans, and setting ambitious goals. It’s a time when we are usually hopeful, optimistic, and excited about the idea of a fresh start. We use our quiet time wisely and map out a course for success for each role we play in life. However, as the days click on by, we sometimes forget about the excitement a New Year brings and the energy we invested into writing out our plan.
During the beginning of a New Year, I tend to invest more heavily in leadership books than any other time of the year. Primarily because self-leadership is the most difficult form of leadership. Devoting time to develop myself assures me that I will remain focused on what matters most and be able to follow through with my plans and keep my priorities balanced.
One book of leadership I repeatedly turn to is the Book of Proverbs found in the Old Testament. I love this book because it gives answers to life’s complexities in simple terms and illustrations. The main author of the book was King Solomon — the richest man who ever lived. He was blessed with everything this world offered simply because he pleased the heart of God by asking for Wisdom instead of the material things of this world.
There’s a passage of Scripture in the Book of Proverbs that states the following:
“Where there is no vision, the people perish…” –Proverbs 29:18
It’s simple, to the point and grabs your attention.
If you want to prosper in 2009, you need a vision! Not just a vision for fitness, your marriage, your finances, etc… But, a vision for life! Something that becomes your guiding compass during these unsettling times.
In order to accomplish this, go back to the basics. Life is simple, don’t complicate it.
One of the best definitions I’ve ever heard for vision is the one presented in Bill Hybels’ book, Axiom. It states the following:
“Vision is a picture of the future that produces passion in people.
Whatever the picture, if it produces powerful amounts of passion in those who hear it, it is already en route to being achieved.”
So, let me ask you, what’s your vision for 2009? Do you know? Have you written it down?
Use the above definition to aid as your compass to achieving the unthinkable this year. It can be your best if you plan accordingly.
Happy New Year!
