As I said in closing of Part 3 of this series, this next step is invaluable to the equation of success. Everyone that I know who is a success includes this last step to their daily routine. It is the catalyst for change. It is the compass that guides. It is the road map for your journey. It will take you to new levels, will open new doors of opportunity and will allow you to reach your potential. It is the discipline of writing out your goals!
Step 4: Write out your GOALS
Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal. Therefore, if you want to obtain success in life, you must actively participate in the worthy ideals that flood your mind.
Writing goals is much like eating at an expensive restaurant. The menu typically doesn’t include the price of the item. You simply pick and choose what you want without considering the cost. You have to confront the process of writing goals the exact same way.
In other words, don’t discredit yourself on why you shouldn’t have XYZ just because it is expensive. If you truly want XYZ, write it out on your goal list and allow it to come into your life.
Jim Carrey wrote himself a check for $20 million when he arrived in Hollywood at age 17. The check “for services rendered” was a goal — a reminder of his dream and of his past. A few years earlier, Carrey’s accountant father had been laid off and the whole family had to get jobs at a factory near Toronto. Carrey put in eight-hour shifts AFTER school to make ends-meet.
He had his mind set on a goal. He didn’t consider the cost. He wrote out what his dreams and ambitions were and went after them.
You should do the same!
Start by writing out what you want. Be specific. If it’s a car, write out exactly the make, model, color, specifications, etc…
Next, establish a deadline for when you want to obtain this goal. Remember, A GOAL WITHOUT A DEADLINE IS JUST A WISHLIST! Set a deadline.
A wise mentor of mine once stated, “Shoot for the moon, if you land on a star, at least you’re higher than where you started!”
Well put!
Once you write them out and set a deadline, you must read through them at least three times per day. Remind yourself where you are heading. Speak them out loud. Allow them to permeate your subconscious and change the way you see yourself and your surroundings.
I write my goals out on a 3 by 5 index card. I read through them once in the morning, once over lunch and once before going to sleep.
Remember, the two most powerful times during the day is the first 30 minutes upon rising and the last 30 minutes before falling asleep. Take advantage of that time by reminding yourself what you want out of life.
As you put these steps into action, I’d appreciate your feedback on how they are impacting your life. Post a comment to this series or simply drop me an e-mail.
One of my goals with this website is to EMPOWER you as a cyclists but much more importantly as a human being. I trust you’ll been changed as you implement the information.
