Back to Basics – Part 3

by Dr. Patrick MacNamara on June 29, 2008

Everyone has their own definition of success; however, not everyone knows how to obtain it. Furthermore, success isn’t a destination but a journey. Choose your journey wisely and reap the benefits of its reward.

One of the cornerstones to a successful life is having a daily routine. Every successful person I know has one and implements it on a continual basis.

Before moving to Step 2 in our discussion of developing a daily routine, you may want to review part 1 and part 2 of this series.

Take time to understand the purpose of a daily routine before plowing through the next step. Really think about how this tool can impact your life. Ask yourself if you are ready to commit to it. If so, start today and form the habit. It only takes 21 days to form but will produce a lifetime of joy, peace and contentment.

Step 2: Renew Your Mind

Romans 12: 2

2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Obviously, renewing your mind encompasses reading God’s Word, the Bible. Hundreds upon thousands of self-help and self-improvement books are based off of the inspired Word of God. It’s His Word that changes our thinking which inevitably changes our future.

Outside of God’s Word, you can renew your mind by listening to something inspirational. I enjoy many types of music but, to clear my mind, I’ll listen to worship music that brings glory to the Almighty. At the top of my list is Jeff Deyo’s The Worship Collection.

Secondly, listen to something motivational. Again, there is a wide array of material available to motivate you. It is just a matter of preference, organization and discipline to fill your ears with the right material to propel you forward.

Lastly, listen to something educational. We all should be actively pursuing education. It doesn’t stop when you cross the graduation line. It is an ongoing process that keeps the mind sharp and keen which will aid in wise decisions down the road.

Now obviously, you don’t just renew your mind with your ears. You also renew your mind with your eyes and mouth.

Renewing your mind with your eyes entails reading the right material. Follow the same premise as the content you listen to. Read something inspirational, motivational and educational.

The old adage is true: Garbage In = Garbage Out.

Don’t fill your eyes with garbage. Fill them with something that will add to you positively not negatively.

Renew your mind by speaking the right words. I could literally write an entire series on just this topic. Nevertheless, the principle is to speak words that will inspire, motivate and educate your mind. Your ears hear what you say and will impact the way you think.

Now, I realize that this series doesn’t directly pertain to road cycling. However, remember the purpose of this site — it is to EMPOWER the cycling enthusiasts. Invest in your total being and you’ll find greater joy in your passion of cycling.

Part 4 of this series will wrap up the routine. It is invaluable to the equation so don’t miss it. And, by all means, IMPLEMENT the material.

Remember, INFORMATION without IMPLEMENTATION leads to DEPRESSION, FRUSTRATION and FAILURE!
