Back to Basics – Part 2

by Dr. Patrick MacNamara on June 25, 2008

I introduced a concept last week of having a daily routine. Before I move forward, however, I’d like to state that this isn’t something new nor did I create the concept. I’ve simply learned and applied these principles that have been passed down to me via mentors and successful friends. They have become the foundation of my life and the compass for my future. So, without further ado…let’s walk through a daily routine.

Now, I’m not talking about getting dressed, taking a shower, brushing your teeth, etc… I’m talking about establishing a daily routine for success in your life.

In order to accomplish this, the first step is to get in the habit of rising early.

STEP 1: Rise Early

Proverbs 6:9-11 states the following:

9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
When will you get up from your sleep?

10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest-

11 and poverty will come on you like a bandit
and scarcity like an armed man.

If you want success in life, you must rise early.

The most powerful time of the day is the first 30 minutes upon rising and the last 30 minutes before falling asleep. This is the time that your innate or creative spirit is at its sharpest. Learn to listen to it and you’ll be amazed at what treasures will be dropped into your life.

Now, you may be asking, “Rise early for what?”

Pre-thought!

You rise early to give your day pre-thought for success.

Stephen Covey states that everything is created twice. Therefore, if you want a successful day, you must create it in your mind first before it becomes reality.

The principle behind this is that you can’t expect success in life if you simply shoot from the hip. You’ve got to establish a game plan, a vision, a purpose and a goal for what you do in life and whom you want to become. This all starts with pre-thought upon rising early.

The next post will walk you through step 2. If you have additional questions or comments regarding today’s post, please leave them in the comments section.

Well said! I totally agree about the early part of the day. Although tough to do at times, nothing beats having the roads all to yourself!

I agree, Jack. Rising early is difficult but the payoff is immense!
