5 Reasons Why This Blog Will Change More Than Your Cycling

by Dr. Patrick MacNamara on April 25, 2008

Let’s face it, you are passionate about cycling. You wouldn’t have landed here if you weren’t. However, I realize that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of other websites and blogs devoted to the sport of cycling each with their unique style and perspective. That’s why the focus of this site is different than most — to empower you as an individual so that your passion will have a purpose each time you climb onto the bike.

Personal development comes from a well-balanced life. To obtain balance, we as cyclists can’t just think about our physical attributes. We have to dig deeper into who we truly are. We have to understand what our foundation is made of and how to make it stronger.

In order to accomplish this task, five areas of our lives have to be examined and monitored on a consistent basis for true success to occur. Remember, success is a journey, not a destination. Therefore, much discipline, determination and focus is required to enjoy the journey.

Reason #1: We will focus on the PHYSICAL

Yes, this is a no-brainer! But, how many of you actually focus on cross-training or other forms of exercise that compliment your overall cycling abilities?

For example, core stability and strengthening exercises can make a huge difference in the way you ride in as little as four weeks. Yoga will improve your flexibility which will pay dividends during those long charity rides. Consistent stretching will diminish your risk of injury and keep you in the saddle longer. Proper diet will aid the body during hard efforts and replenish the reserves during recovery.

Remember, variety is the spice of life. So, incorporate other forms of exercise to increase your overall fitness level. When your overall fitness level improves, your cycling improves.

Reason #2: We will focus on the MENTAL

We’ve all heard “Mind over Matter”. Well, this is true! If you want to overcome physical barriers, you have to feed the mind first with the right “food” daily.

The Book of Proverbs states that as a man thinks, so is he. If you think negative thoughts toward yourself or your abilities, you’ll produce negative results in your life. Obviously, if you think positive thoughts, you’ll generate positive outcomes. Therefore, work everyday on your Positive Mental Attitude and you’ll see remarkable changes in your cycling.

Reason #3: We will focus on the EMOTIONAL

Remember, we are touching upon the five attributes of a successful person, not just a successful cyclists. You see, you cannot reach your fullest potential in cycling without examining every aspect of who you are.

A mentor of mine once said that emotions and reason do not mix. Where there is emotion, there is no reason. Where there is reason, there is no emotion. Referring to business, he went on to say that enthusiasm is the yeast that raises the dough. No enthusiasm, no dough!

The principle behind this is that if you want to accomplish anything great in life, you must be enthusiastic about whatever it is you want to be great at. Therefore, if you want to be great at cycling, you must be enthusiastic about it. Don’t look at it as just killing time with friends. Look at it as a tremendous opportunity to improve who you are. In other words, everyday, in every way, I’m getting better and better!

Reason #4: We will focus on the FINANCIAL

What? The financial? Many of you are asking, “what does that have to do with anything?”

Obviously, finances have everything to do with your passion of cycling. If it wasn’t for money, you wouldn’t be rolling down that country road on $3000 worth of carbon. You also wouldn’t own cycling shoes that cost more than any other pair of shoes in your closet.

Money is extremely important in the equation of success. If you want to be successful, you have to learn how to master money. Money is a wonderful servant but a horrible master. Work toward balancing your finances and your cycling will prosper too!

Reason #5: We will focus on the SPIRITUAL

I may lose some of you on this one. But, it is hard to deny. A successful person is one who has made peace with God.

Actually, the buck stops here. There is no success without God. Read Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23 and then John 3:16-17.

I’m not going to go into a long dissertation here; however, if you want total freedom and total success, put God first and He’ll bless all other endeavors, including the passion we enjoy called cycling.

Very interesting post. I’ve been working on living a life in balance ~ that’s part of what got me back on a bike. Nice to see that balance applies to every aspect of life ~ including being a cyclist.
Thanks
